FIGHT FOR TRENCHES.
SEVERE GERMAN LOSSES
Received thia day, 12.15 a.m. Paris, Friday
During the storm on Tuesday the Germans between Ypres and La Bassee crept towards the English trenches in onen order and the enemy's artillery fired wide of our trenches. They were allowed to approach unopposed except from shell fire. Wlien they reached the English tren ches, which had been purposely evacuated, they were shot down to a man by a terrific enfilading fire. Four lines were completely shattered, while the English did not suffer a singe casuaity. One hundred and forty Germans in the Ypres district stealthily at night time occupied deserted French trenches. The French resolving to starve them out, watched for five days, then sent a German prisoner to damand their surrender. The enemy were dying of hunger and willingly surrendered.
