On the 21st September, the New Zealand Dairy Ansociation, Ltd., distributed amongst its suppliers the sum of £4G,50! 8s <*d. . This payment covered 9?-1,8821us of butter fat supplied during tiie month. The amount ot butterfat for the corresponding month last year was 8G4,0131b5. One of tho signs of tho times, indicating nur progress in the matter of roads, is the advent of the bicycle.. Mackay and Joneu, Ltd., advertise in another column the Phillip's special machine, which they sell for £7 10b, complete with Michelin tyres, etc. Special servictD are being held in the Methodist Church on Sunday and Monday next in the interests of the Homo Mission Fund. £Tho Rev. J. Olphert is the preacher. Ho will also deliver a lecture on Monday on "Life on the New Zealand Gumfields." The presence of Miss Elsie Olphert, late suprano soloist in Pitt street church, Auckland, will add greatly to the interest of the services. MiSB Olphert will sing "He Shall Feed His Flock'' and "Rock of Ages" on Sunday, and will render a couple of solos at Monday night' lecture. TbeHon. Dr Pomare, member of the Executive, representing the native race, and Dr Te Rnngihiron, M.f. for fhe Northern Maori district, have volunteeed for service with the Maori contingent bb medical officers. It is hoped there will bo a good attendance at the Municipal Hall at 3 o'clock to-morrow afternoon, when, ot.her duties permitting, his Worship the Mayor and Cr Somerville, will for mally open the sale of of work on behalf of the Congregational Church The admission in tho afternoon will be free. In the evening at 7 o'clock the charge will be Is, s:nd what with the competitions, the amusements and the music, there is every prospect of a pleasant time. Mr L. G. P. Spencer, who has been engaged by the Te Puke Town Board as consulting engineer to design a water supply and street improvement scheme, left this week to carry out the necessary surveys, etc. The Board proposes to prosecute active operations as the present dry Eeason is being felt acutely in the town, the condition of things being at present somewhat analogous to that of Coolgardie in the early days, where the weekly wash was, wo believe, performed with the aid of the nearest gum stump, minus the water. The controversy concerning the usefulness of Dreadnoughts ns compared with submarines received a striking advertisement on Monday. When the Empress Picture Company's Dreadnought wbb proceeding to the Domain 'it waa suddenly seen to list and go down. It has nut yet been ascertained whether the occurrence was due to i torpedo from a submarine, or to the exceptional draught of tho big warship, but the vessel was put r out of action early in its career. Considerable interest is being taken in the Croquet Club this season already and the following donations have been made towards providing for the comfort of players and visitors —Garden seat by Mrs Albrechtsen, seat covers by Mrs Wolff, and two upholstered eeats by Mr J. B. Young
