A PUBLIC APPEAL.

The Editor. Sir, —Kindly allow me through your pages to bzing. before the notice of the public in Te ICuiti and district, the annual self-denial appeal of tha Salvation Army. We rely upon this effort largely for the maintenance of our social, missionary, and general operations throughout the world, and I respectfully solicit your kind heip, aa in former years, you will know something of our operations in the Dominion. Tha homes for children are always fell, the same appll?s to ths workmen's homes, rescue homes and maternity hospitals. Tha remarkable work dona in theße institutions and others speaks for itself, and I would point out it is made possible largely by the self-denial and devotion of the officers in charge. Our appeal thiß year is made under difficult circumstances. The war is making great demands and let loose a flood of generosity such as, I suppose, bas?never been seen before, but we are earnestly looking to our friends and welll-wishers pot to lessen their contributions on that account. Our work must go on—the needy, the wretched, the sinful will still look to us for help, which must not be withheld. It is more than likely, too, that the war will bring in its train additional burdens which we hope to be in a position to relieve. I send you herewith a pamphlet which deal* witht he world-wide work of the Salvation Army, and will give you some idea of what we -are doine. It is in order to maintain this good woik that we approach our friends at this time. Our own beople will deny themselves and labour and strive in connection with this effort. But we need your assistance, too, for which we shall be most .grateful.—l am, etc., A. HERRING, Ensign, Officer in Charge, Taumarunui.
