EMDEN BOMBARDS MADRAS.
! LITTLE DAMAGE DONE. Calcutta,' Thursday. Renter's Agency reports that the crusier Emden, which sank five British steamers in the Bay of Bengal, shelled Madras. Ne seriouH damage was done to the town. SHORT BUT SHARP. DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £20,000 Received this day, 8.5 a.m; Bombay, Friday. The bombardment of Madras is estimated to have caused damage to the extent of £20,000. Tha population behaved admirably and there was an entire absence of panic. Calcutta, Friday. The Emden at Madras on the night of the 23rd, fired nine shots. The first hit th?.~ Burma Oil Company's tanks igniting them. Two other buildings were struck but were undamaged. Three Indians were killed. When our guns replied the Emden ceased firing and extinguished her lights and departed. The affair lasted fifteen minutes.
