MANGAOTAKI METALLING SCHEME.
JOINT LOAN PROPOSAL. WAITOMO AND AWAKINO COUNTIES. The scheme for metalling the roads of the Mangaotaki district, which has been under consideration uy the settlers for some time, was advanced a step further on Monday evening when the preliminary resolutions in i connection with the proposal were I passed by the Waitomo County Council. Mr P. Mora, County clerk, in explaining the scheme, said it had been decided that the most equitable method to adopt was on the basiß of a special rate of one penny in the £ on capital value of all thi properties in the special area. This meant thai each settler would be paying at exactly the same rate according to valuation. The amount this produced would be £231 9s lOd in Waitomo County and £328 4s in Awakino County. The Waitomo County would, therefore, require to raise the sum of £3700 and the Awakino County £5300, making a total of £9OOO, the interest and sinking fund on which would be covered by the penny rate. Meetings affirming the proposal have to be called in each County by the chairman of the Council and a poll of ratepayers taken in each County before the proposal can be carried into effect. If the ratepayers in either County fail to carry the proposal at the poll the ' whole scheme will fall through. The scheme includes the metalling of the Manaotaki road from Poi. Pio to the junction of the Mahoenui-Kawhia road, and about three miles of the upper Mangaotaki; also about five miles of the Mahoenui-Kawhia road. In addition it includes the forming and culvertnig of a road to Puketiti. The scheme is of considerable importance to both Counties as it will have the effect of providing access to Te Kuiti by metalled road for a large district.
