A DESPERATE STRUGGLE.
GERMAN BATTALION CAPTURED. Received Tuesday, 9.25 p.m. London. Monday. A field artillery gunner relates a terrible struggle on September 6th, when the Germans tried to cross the river. The British guns and pickeJ rifle shots commanded ths river, the Germans swarmed to the river side. The first party built a pontoon bridge and was rushing across when a shell smashfld the bridge, and pontoon with dead and wounded freight, were carried downstream. The same thing went on all day until the British ware sick with the sight and shrieks. The Germans managed to cross at one point and the Allies rushed with rare joy and bayonetted them into the river. A whole battalion was captured here. They simply couldn't face the bayonets and threw up their arms.
