ARIA

Own Correspondent The best attended and one of the most enjoyable dances for a long time was held in the Aria Ball on Friday evening of last we*k. In spite of the continued wet weather and the consequent very bad state of the roads, ladies attended from long distances. The music was supplied by Mr and Mrs Caseels, while Mr C. E. West made an efficient M.C. All thoroughly enjoyed a set-down suppar in Mr Ki'gour's boarding house. Songs were rendered in good style by Mrs Cas3els, Mr Cassels, and M>Ward. A very pleasing feature of the evening was the presentation of a pursa of sovereigns to Mis 3 AnderBon, late postmistress, upon her approaching marriage. Distinct evidence of progress is seen in many directions. Several new milking plants are being erected and most dairymen are increasing their herds. The Mokau Jones' estate is fast being made productive, and recently 3400 sheep passed through Aria for a part of that property. The owner hatf a particularly trying time en route on account cf the boggy slate of the roads. He also had the misfortune to lose Boms by tutu poisoning while crossing on the unimproved native lands.

A pleasing ceremony took place .at the Kaeaea school last Friday week. when Mr Hames, the teacher, .said farewell to his pupils. Miss Ans%ll, in making the presentation, referred to the enthusiasm and ze»l of their maeter.and wished him all success and good'.fortune in the future. AJady ; teacher takes his place. Patriotism and loyalty to the Empire fn her hour of trial are in evidence on every side. Almost every eligible young man is eager to do his duty, and many have applied Some already have been chosen and have taken their places in the ranks. In past years we have heard about a decadent Empire, but if "unity is strength" there is strong evidence to the contrary.
