GERMAN NAVAL METHODS

MINING TRADE ROUTES. . NEUTRAL STEAMERS SUNK. Paris, Sunday. Th 9 Official Press Bureau states that tha steamship Maryland, bound from Copenhagen, struck a mine on, Friday night in the msin trade route, thirty-fiva miles from land. The Danish steamer Broberg saw tha disaster and launched her boats but failed to find the crew. The Broberg inchored for the night a"d began the search again next morning. She struck a mine while thus engaged, and foundered. The Broberg's crew, exeeptjjthe engineer, were saved and Lowestoft. The Admiralty h«s issued a notice warning neutrals that the Germans continue to scatter indiscriminately mines which do not conform to the conditions laid down by the Hague Convention, namely, that such mines must be go constructed as to become harmless within a few hours after being laid. The Admiralty points out that the German mines are not laid in connection with a definite naval scheme, but are scattered on the chance of catching British warships and merchant vessels. In addition to the Maryland and Broberg, two Dutch steamers, when dealing Swedish ports, were blown up by German mines in the Gulf of Finland. The' British Admiralty warns neutrals to call at British ports before entering the North Sea in order to ascertain the routes the Admiralty is Keeping swept. The Admiralty officials edd that though they reserve to themselves the utmost liberty in taking retaliatory action aga : nst this new form of warfare, they have not laid any mineß during the present war.
