AUSTRIA MOBILISING AGAINST ITALY

Information as" to the progress of the engagement is meagre, but is is stated the British troops "defended their position at Mons on Sunday and during the night. . ! * The fighting has evidently been heaviest at Charleroi, which has . . been .taken and re-taken'during the course of ,the battle.' ; - The latest wires state the allies' plans are being carried out method- • ically, but definate information as to-the. result of the engagement is impossible for some time owing to the extent of the battle line and the numbers engaged. The relations between Italy and Austria are highly strained and, both contries are mobilising on tlie frontier. The Russian army continues its advance ia Prussia and news of an important victory at Gumbinnen is confirmed. The Austrians are meeting with reverses at the hands of the Servians and Montenegrins. A reassuring message has been received from Sofia to the effect that Bulgaria and Roumania have settled all their misunderstandings rr with Turkey while amicable relations have also been established 'with Greece. • .
