BRILLIANT BELGIUM VICTORY SEVERE GERMAN LOSSES' THE COUNTRY DEVASTATED Received this day, 8.35 o'clock Brussels, Friday In the attack on Haelem and Diest, the Belgians allowed the enemy to advance slowly. The Germans hurled themselves against the barricades which they endeavoured to carry by force. The Belgians shot them down Thß attack on the ridges was as savage as that at the barricades. The Gfirmans fell rapidly and were almost shattered. They retreated in great disorder towards Tongres Meanwhile the Germans at Huy are bombarding the forts,particularly that jutting from the peninsula on the north bank which hampered the crossing of the cavalry A column on Thursday crossed between Huy and Namur and reached Eugheaee and Joaoigne respectively south and north of Ramillies, and captured the guns An artillery and cavalry duel was continued on Thursday, when the Belgains brouhgt up frash troops to relieve those fighting on Wednesday It is estimated the Germans lost a thousand killed and wounded in the two days. The Belgains lost few dead, but a considerable number wsre wounded English correspondents report that the country* at Tirlemont and Lainttrom and which at the beginning of the week were rich cornfields and well tended gardens, are now farms of smoking ruins and downtrodden fields, The German staff at Liege has occupied the Convent Saccrecolur, and itself against attack
