CAVALRY BRIGADE ANNIHILATED London, Thursday It is semi-officially announced in St. Petersburg that the Russians drove out the Austrians from Sokal, an important frontier post in Gailcia, due north of Lemberg They pursued the Austrians acrosß the Bug river, blowing up a bridge and a viaduct A German general commands the Austrian troop 3on the Austrian frontier An Italian message states that an Austrian cavalry brigade on the frontier waß attacked by Cossacka and artillery Unable to hold its position the brigade attempted to retreat in the midst of a heavy rainstorm They were caught in marshy ground and the whole brigade was exterminated The Germans are fortifying their position near Kalisz and Sieradz, in Russian Poland Telegrams from Berlin state that the German dtaff has informed the press tha* Germany haa auatained heavy losses on the Russian frontier
