THE RETIRING AGE.
Speaking at Minneapolis, Mr Taft ridiculed the idea that the present age, whether in America or Europe, was an age of very young men. He declared, from his vast experience 88 a lawyer, legislator and administrator, that a man at 60 was usually in the'zenith of his usefulness and ability. In many cases the zenith was reached considerably later. He recognised, of course, the enthusism and fire of youth, but a man's character for service waß not perfectly developed, he Baid, until he added the virtues of' self restraint and self-sacrifice, which came later. "To use an American enthusiasm," said the former President, "this talk about too old at 40 or 50 just gets my goat, and giveß me a seveie pain in the neck." The phrase "to get my goat" or "Angora"indicates the keenest degree of exasperation, and "a pain in the neck" iB an even stronger idiom of the same class.
