TE KUITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
FOREMAN'S REPORT General: During the month the ordinary work in connection with the borough has been carried out. Careful attention is being paid to outside roads to keep them clear as possible from holes. The whole of tha water tables in the borough have been cleaned out, and careful attention is being paid to them to prevent the scouring of roads. Several footpaths in the borough have also been repaired.— Rora street Breastwork: Careful attention ia being paid to this, and since lagt meeting no further damage has occurred—Quarrying at Te Kumi Quarry: Last month at the quarry haß been a very broken one, owing to the many stoppages occurring through want of power. The crusher was kept going when possible, and 650 yards of stone were crushed. — Sewers: These are being carefully attended to, being flushed out every week,' and kept in a clean condition. —Approach to Te Ahuroaßoad: This road is now completed a distance of 40 chains long, from the Esplanade Lawrence street to tha rise to the hill. The culvert across the roads at the foot of tha hill was only a 12 inch pipe which was too small. This has been replaced by an 18 incn pipe. The 12 inch pipes taken out were used in another part of the road. Total metal spread on this road ia 1500 cubic yards.—Awakinu Road: The whole of the water tables from the hill tops to the bottom have been cleaned out. Three new culverts have been laid across where found necessary, and all bad holes in the road are heing patched with metal. I am having the metal for repairing this road drawn by the steam roller, making the co3t of repairing same considerably less than if carts were engaged.—Ngarongo Street: This street has been treated with a coat of limestone metal 12 feet wide blinded with river shingle'. A footpath will aho be constructed along one side. — Jennings Street: This street is now being formed to be treated with a coating of limestone metal 18 feet wide blinded with river shingle. There will also be footpaths formed on both sides one eide being blinded with chippings only. —Ssddon Street: This street has been formed and treated with a coating of limestone metal 12 feet wide a distance of 18 chains, blinded with river Bhingle. There also will be a footpath formed the whole length of the street. Total yards of metal spread on this street is 550 cubic yards.—Queen Street: This street has Deen formed and treated with a coating of limestone metal 12 feet wide from Carroll street to Princess street, a distance of 17& chains. The total yards of metal spread on this street is 530 cubic yards.—Kowhai Street: The contractor for this street, Mr Mernin, has failed to erect the steps provided for in the specifications of his contract. I might state that I saw Mr Mernin on July Ist and complained, to him about same. He has now left the erection of the steps in my hands, which will be gone on with at o,nce, the amount of erecting same to be deducted from his contract money. The rubble wall being erected to protect the entrance to this street ia proceeding very satisfactorily Duke Street: This street has been top-dressed with river Bhingle from Ngatai street down to Ward street. —Fire Brigade j Tower: As instructed by the Council ' a tower has been erected for the uae ; of firemen in the recreation ground.in a position shown me by, the captain of the fire brigade—Municipal Buildings: As instructed by the Works Committee the storm water drainage of the building has been connected to tue storm water drainage of the power station. The concrete floor of the convenience being erected for the use of the hall has also been laid.— T. Dix, Borough Foreman. , ELE°CTRICA J L ENGINEER'S REI PORT Connections, Etc.: Connections made this.month 9, applications registered this month 6, total connections to mains 202, total applications registered 226.—Street Lighting: This has been maintained constantly over the set hours of burning during the past month with the exception of one night —Sunday, June 218t —when the engine could not be run owing to producer trouble. The battery discharge on the house lighting was over the normal and the street lamps could not be supplied —Mains and Network: An inspection of these' was made on July sth.and they show signs in many places of requiring tightening and restraining, this work will be taken in hand as soon as possible.—Gas Producer Plant: Considerable trouble has been met with in this direction during the past month. It was found necessary to shut the producer down on four occasions during the month for
repairs. The nature of the trouble hEs been commnicated to the consulting engineer and the position* pointed out, that the producer in its present state is greatly endangering the undertaking. ' It was only possible to make the repairs of a temporary nature owing to certain parts ot the producer being so badly distorted and broken that they must be replaced with new ones. —Extension to Mr Sanderson's Premises. Esplanade: Theße premises are situated at a distance of nine chains from the nearest supply mai::s, and the cost of extending the supply mains in order to give the supply would be as follows: Polns, £7; 18 chains 3-125 aluminium cable, £6 3s; insulators, crossarms, bolts, etc., 15s; erection, £2 2s; total £l6. —Quarterly Accounts: All meters have been read for the quarter ending June 30th, and in cases wnere meters are not installed the amount of current consumed has been eitimated. —R. H. Baatley, Engineer. ELECTRIC LIGHT COMMITTED. Tne following recommendations by the Electric Light Committee were adopted at the last meeting of the Borough Council:—That Mr Fradk. Black, of Wellington, be engaged as consulting engineer in connection with the proposed duplication of plant and extension of mains, in terms of his letter dated July 7th, 1914. and that such terms be hereby agreed upon by the Council; that the town clerk be instructed to furnish the Te Aroha Borough Council with infomation they ask for in connection with our electric light department; that the supply of power applied for by Wilson's Portland Cement Co. to their quarry situated on Waiteti road be supplied at a flat rate of 2d per unit for 25 horsepower and by the date stipulated by them, viz , September 30th 1914, but with a proviso from the Council that they guarantee a minimum revenue of! £l5O per annum in consideration of the fact that the Council will have to spend a sum of approximately £3O to extend the mains to their quarry; that the Te Kuiti Picture Co. be informed, in reply to their ccmmuniciation of July 7th. 1914, that iha Council will sup ply then .with ths necessary power for their pictures in the Town Hall, but are unabli to guarantee the supply before August lOih, 1914; that the clerk be instructed to reply to Mr Darrow'a letter drawing the committee's attention to the dangerous point of the lower end of Awakino road owing to the absence of any Btreet light and requesting the committee to erect a lamp opposite Mr Vercoe's house, that at the present juncture the committee regret being unable to recommend the Council to erect any additional street lamps, but his application will receive every consideration when the committea extend the street lighting system, if the contemplated poll is carried.
