ATTEMPTED TRAIN WRECKING.
[ AN ARREST MADE REMAND ON HEAVY BAIL [IIY TKLiaiRAI'II. —I'RKSS ASSOCIATION.] , Palmerston North, Mundßy. A sensational sequel to recent ruinoura of the. attempted wreck of the Main Trunk train by placing ft beam across the railß at Awapuni.waß enacted in Court this morning, when a young man named John Mason, waß charged, that on July Bth, at; Awa« puni, he did wilfully place an obstruction on the railway line between Pal* merston North and Longburn. Detectives Quirke and Sweeney made the arrest on Saturday. A remaiid was granted till Tuesday, 21st inst. Accused's counsel, Mr Innes, asked for bail, which was opposed by SubInspector Marsack, who said a very serious offence had been committed. Accused did not appear to be compos mentis, and with men in this condiion there was no Becurity that they might not repeat the offence. Mr Poynton, S.M., said the offence was next to murder. A hundred paople might have been killed. Bail was fixed at £IOOO and two BUretißß of £SOO.
