AWAKINO COUNTY.

The Editor. Sir,—"Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis'folly to bo wise,"is an adage that applies to more persons, communities, and nationalities tnan any other. It is, and was, and always will be, ever present, where human kind exists. To apply the aphorism to local surroundings, I propose to point out the happy ignorance of a section of the ratepayers of the Awakino County, who are pressing anxiously to have their local government administered from Kewhia, because they want to get to the harbour. Now, ttie ;"jblissful" fact of the matter is, that almost every settler in the Kawhia County is agitating with might and main for good roads to various points along the Main Trunk line. Rightly, they consider their interests lie at the railway and vice versa. _■, vThat the actions of these settlers are'most inconsistent is realised by the fact that material is at present being secured for the erection of a wharf and shed at Marakopa to cost £BOO, half of which ia guaranteed by Battlers.' The structure is to be erected, on the Awakino side, of the river. I* they joined in the general harmony of things, in assisting to secure accesss to the railway, from all points, they would be doing something substantial, instead of causing dissension. Nevertheless, lam convinced that the position is caused by a-few disturbers of the peace, who believe that the sun Bets and rises on Kawhai. However, they need not be frightened, the harbour won't run away. They remind me of the maid that milked the cow with the crumpled horn: '.'They are all forlorn" : who keep a figurative dog to be"tosßßd," a cat to be "worried" and a rat to ba-f Willed."—l am, etc, AWAKINO COUNTY RATEPAYER.
