OTOROHANGA.

Own Correspondent. LIBERAL LEAGUE. The monthly meeting of the local branch of the Progressiva Liberal League was held on Friday of last week. Mr J no. Ormsby presided, and there were twenty-three members present. It was decided to ask Sir Joseph Ward to address a meeting in Otorohanga while he was in the district. A lot of important business in connection with the League was discussed, including the question of an organißer. A number of new members were enrolled. Mr Cruickshank, of Otewa, who was to have addressed the meeting, wsb indisposed and could not attend, but the members will have an opportunity of hearing blm at next monthly meeting, due notice of which will be given. v APRON SOCIAL. The "Apron Social" under 1 the, auspices of the Anglican Ladies' Guild, was held on Tuesday night, and was exceptionally well. attended, the hall being too small for comfortable dancing, Mr C. K. Wilson, member for the district, contributed a Maori character sketch in his usual breezy style, which was much appreciated. • The music wa* provided by Mesdames Piggot, Hassant, and Ciaridge. Miss Claridge, and Messrs Howard Bannister and Josephson, and was all that could be desired. During the evening the ladies transferred their aprons to their partners, some of whom caused much laughter. Messrs T. CumpßtOnp and L.' Claridge proved themselves efficient M's.C. A very excellent supper was served, to which full justice asß done. The committee are to be congratulated on the success of the function. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. I am Borry to report that the monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, which should have been held last Tuesday evening lapsed for want of a quorum. The Chamber has now been in exitence for nearly three years, and this is the first time since its inception that a meeting has had to be abandoned We do not know whether this is a protest against the earring of the motion to exclude mem" bers of the Town Board from acting on the Chamber executive or lack of interest of members, but we sincerely hope it Is the former. At any rate it iB surprising that the members who were instrumental in the carrying of the motion, should have been conspicuous by their absence. As a properly constituted Chamber _of Commerce, run on business lines is a powerful asset in a rising township like oura, it is to be hoped that the activity shown by. members in the past will be renewed at next and future meetings. WEDDING BELLS. Two Maori weddings, which created a good deal of local interest took place here on Tuesday. Mr Paul Tane and Miss Rarorangi Tata, and Mr Tamihana Eruete and Mi?B Hemongaiti Tamaki were the contracting parties. The Rev. Honi Harris officiated. The brides, attired in European style, were attended by eight bridesmaids. The town band enlivened the proceedings and a large number of friends attended the wed. ding breakfast, which Was held at the residence of the brides' parents. NATIVE TRACKS. It iB understood a case for hearing at Te Awamutu, concerning the right to use a native track from Kio Kio to Mangaronga which has aroused a considerable amount of interest amongst settlers locally has been settleed out of court. It is a pity that the question of using these native tracks has not been fully gone into by the court as it is a matter of importance to all settlers interested in the King Country. FREEZING WORKS SCHEME. A meeting of settlers, convened by Mr P. D. Hargreaves, will be held in the Waipa Buildings on Friday, 26th inst., at 2 p.m. to discuss the scheme of amalgamation of the Waikato Freezing Co., with the Auckland Freezing Co. Mr Tancred Cooper will be present and will give every information, in regard to the new scheme. As this question vitally effects the welfare of the district it is to be hoped that all .those interested will make a point pf beingpresent. GENERAL. Mr E. A. Robinson, of the Te Kuiti music and sports depot, has opened a branch of his business at Otorohanga, under the management of Mr ,W. A. Thompson. A good assortment of musical instruments, etc., iB now on view. Mr Frederic, tailor of Te Awamutu, is to open a branch in Otorohanga in the near future. He has secured one of the new shops lately erected by Mr M. Cowley, in Maniapoto street. At the Magistrate's Cout, this week, on the application of Mr T. G. Hosking, a land agent's license was granted to Mr F. O. Rule, of this town. As this is the eighth appli cation granted during the last six months, it proves beyond doubt that the land in the vicinity is , being much soughi after and speaks well for the future prosperity of the district. Mr C. K. Wilson, member for the district, has -been in the district during the week, looking up old friends and supporters.
