HANGATIKI-WAITOMO ROAD.
HEAVY TOURIST TRAFFIC. ASSISTANCE FOR MAINTEN- *. ANCE. : A matter of considerable importance to the settlers in the Waitomo district was brought before the notice of the Prime Minister on Thursday by a deputation for which Mr Lee was spokesman. It. was pouted oat that the very heavy tourist. traffic on the road was rapidly wearing dot the metal. The rates available from the locality were insufficient to properly maintain the road and the settlers requested that the Department should contribute towards the cost of upkeep. The tourist traffic amounted to a great deal more than the traffic of the settlers and a considerable revenue accrued to the Department from the Caves. It was further pointed cut that the Hon. T. Mackenzie had given a promise that the Government would assist in maintaining" the road. Mr Massey, in reply, referred to the fact that the Government had given a subsidy of £ for £. for metalling the road, but he would go further into the matter and see what' could be done.
