The competition from the Panama Canal would have only a i light effect, and the new waterway would probably prove supplementary rather than competitive. None the less, it would be necessary to reduce the Suez traffic charges to the same figure, as by the Panama route, and to undertake works to enable ships of larger tonnage to use Canal.
