WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL
ENGINEER'S REPORT. Since making my la3t report, engineering surveys for dray road formation were made on the following roads:—Hangatiki to Otordhanga, west side of railway line, distance 1 mile 35 chains; 'le Kumi to Hangatiki, 1 mile 4 chains; Mangaotaki Valley, lower, 45 chains. Plans for these works are now being prepared and will be submitted to the Public Works Department as soon as possible. Tenders for the following contracts were also received, and the lowest in each instance was accepted:—Kio Kio metalling, Contract No. 96, 3. Smytha £5273 Us lOd; Otiruwhero metalling, Contract No. 97, H. Rothery £2255 10s; Mairoa South metalling, Contract No. 99, H. Lewis £IOBS sb; Waipa river briage approaches, .Contract No. 98, W. ' Culverhouse £387 12a. Mr Lewis has now practically completed his metal ling contraTcV on* ths ' Pot'aka road, The total length of the work is 3 miles 13 chains, and a good job has been made. OiVjthe Pio Pio-Aria road Mr Smythe has only a few days' work to do to complete his metalling contract, and good metal has been-sup-plied. On the To Kuiti-Awakino road Mr McDonald completed his metalling contract south of Pio Pio, the total distance metalled being 13 chains. A. Hogg and party have now only a few days' work to do tt complete their formation contract. Owing to the naturu of the country the new work is in a very muddy state; in fact, almost but at this season' of the year nothing of a permanent nature could be done, wita limited funds, to improve it. I hope, however, during the coming summer, to metal some or the worse places. On the south end of the Pokearuhe road Mr Inness, during a spell of fine weather, made an effort to complete his metaling contract, but the weather broke before he was able to accomplish it, leaving another half a raila yet to be done. On the Caves road Messrs Rennie and Tarry are each doing their best to complete their contracts. The former has about 32 chains to metal and the latter about 12 chains, leaving a total of 44 chains 'to complete the metalling of the road which extends a distance of 5 miles 49 chairs. Mr Homan has had to close down his metalling contract on the Maugaorino road until next season. On the Waipapa Mr Hudson has made a start and completed about 12 chains of widening. The bridge over the Waipa river at Kawa has been inspected by the Public Works engineer, and the contract was found to have been carried out satisfactorily. Authority was immediately issued to make the approaches, and as before men tioned, a contract for this work has been let. Some - time ago tenders were invited for the supply.and delivery of 3530 cubic yards of crushed metal on the Pungarehu road—Contract" No. 95—only two tenders were reeeived_and as they were above the estimate, neither was accepted. Mr Inness, however, whose tender was the lower, is now prepared to undertake the work at my estimate of 9s Id per cubic yard, which I propose to accept. With this contract the whole of the metalling for which at present there, is authority, will be in the hands of contractors. The length of metalling recently let is 33"; miles. Application for grants in connection with the Estimates 1914-1915. have been forwarded to the Public Works Department with all necessary information The thirds accrued in the Auckland land district to March 31st last have been scheduled, and proposals for expenditure submitted to the Commissioner in the usual way. The thirds accrued in the Taranaki district will be dealt with as soon aa possible.—E. R. Gould, County Engineer.
