The High Commissioner's market raport, dated London, May 23rd, is as follows, quotations unless otherwise specified, being average market prices on spot : Mutton.—Trade is fair, but prospects are rather less encouraging on account of heavy stocks on hand, and many holders are becoming more anxious to realise. There is a dull sale for heavy carcesas of mutton. Canterbury 4|d, lightweights, North Island 4«fl. Lamb.—The market is firm, with improved demand. Canterbury two's 6.E-16d; heay weights, fours 6 l-16d, other than Canterbury 6-Jd. Beef.—The weather lately has been unfavourable for the sale of beef and there is less demand for New Zealand. Hinds 45d, fores 3£d, chilled hinds 5.Jd, forea 3^. Sutter.—The market is flteady and prices are well maintained. Danish, quiet, per c.wt., 113s to 115s; New Zealar.cl, firm, IOGa to 108s, unsalted, 114s to 116s; Australian, quiet, 100s to 104s; Argentine, quiet, 100s to 102s; Siberian, steady, 98s to 102s; Irish creamery, slow, 107s to 110s. Cheese.—The market is quiet. Canadian, quibt, per cwt., 68s to 70s; New Zealand, steady demand, white 59s to 603, coloured 62s 6d to 63s 6d; Australani, whits 57s to 58s, coloured 59a to 61s. STOCK SALES. Tho Farmers' Auctioneering Company report:— SALE OF TURNIP STOCK.
On May 20th we held our annual Te kuiti salo of stock for turnip feeding. The entry totalled 2699 sheep and 1390 cattle. The Bheep consisted chiefly of wethers, amongst them some splendid lots of big-framed forward sheep. The yarding of cattle appealed to the grazier, all being well bred, and 950 of them bullocks three years old end upwards, good-doing "soppy" cattle. Competition Was keen for all clnssea of stock, and hardly a pen was passed at auction. We quote: —Large-framed 4 and G tooth wethers fat and forward 24s to 295, 2 tooth wethers 17s 6d to 23s 9d, hoggets 12s 6d to 13a lid, forward empty ewes 16s 3d to 17s 7d, aged ewes in lamb 15s to 17s 2d, forward conditioned bullocks 31 to 4 years old £8 10s to £lO 10s, choice 3 to 3i yea? steers £7 2s to £B, fresh 24 to 3 year steers to £6 10s, two heavy bullocks sold Bingly made £l2 and £ls sa, 2 to 21 year store steers £4 10s to £4 19s. eighteen months steers £3 10a to £4, stags and bullocks £4 10s to £7 10s according to condition, fat cows £5 10s to £7 17s 6d, forward empty cows £4 10a to £5, heifers in calf £4 10s. MATAMATA SALE. At Matnmata, on May 20th, we had a good entry, comprising 870 sheep, 50 pigs, 448 calves, and 258 mixed cattle' and a large assortment of sundries. The demand for everything was good, calves especially selling well. Prices were:—Hoggets 103 to 14s 6d, wethers 24s 6d, ewea in lamb 21s lOd, good calves £2 to £2 lis, fair calves 32a 6d to 40s, fat cows £5 10 sto £7 10s, fat and forward steers £8 10s, store cowb £2 9s to £3 12a, dairy heifers £4 10s to £6 ss, eighteen month steers £3 10s to £3 17a 6d, 2i year store steers £4 16s, three year steers £7 lis, dairy cows £5 Is 'to £7 2a 6d.
