OTOROHANGA.
Own Correspondent. ' CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The monthly meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held in Mr Willis' office on Tuesday evening last, Mr Banner, president, took the chair. There wore also present Messrs Worthington, Whyte, Price, Green, White, McDonald, Clarke, Cook, Phillips. Bell. J. A. Ormaby and Kidson. Mr Clyde Phillips was enrolled as a member. ...... A letter was received from u2aihnhi branch of the Farmers' Union favouring Saturday aa the most suitable day for the weekly half-holiday Mr H. M. Quin forwarded a letter published in the New Zealand Herald somo daya ago by Mr Andrew Kay of Kihikihi, in which Mr Kay, points out that Otorobanga is the most suitable place to establish freezing works, "as it ia the nearest railway point to serve the large area of land between the railway and the West coast, which embraces the counties of Wailomo and Kawhia. •—On Mr Whyte's proposal it was resolved to forward the letter to the provisional directors of the Waikato Freezing Co., with a covering letter in support thereof. Mr F. Whyte's notice of motion, "That no member of the Chamber s executive could hold office on the Town Council," caused a considerable discussion. After.tbe clause had been added, "to noma into force six months from date," it was put to the meeting and carried, voting for the' motion and four against. A recommendation to the executive, "That a salary be paid to tho secretary when same is appointed." wad brought up by Messrs Worthington and Cook. After the question had been fully discussed it was not put to the meeting. A number ot members of the Chamber who were not present at the meeting appear to be somewhat surprised at the carrying of the motion to exclude members of the Town Council from the exective. They think that a special meeting should have been called fur this purpose and tho fact well advertised. It seems hardly right that out of a membership roll of 40 odd only ten should have decided this important question. When it is considered that three or four of the most energetic members of thn Chamber a executive are members of the Council. it seems that the Chamber has not imDroved its position by carrying the motion, as undoubtedly 'live men" are what they most require. The principal argument in favour of the motion, viz. that it is desirable to havß two distinct bodies, as when working for a common cause they would carry more weight, is feaseable enough, but surelv out of a roll number such as tho Chamber pes Besses, a deputation could easily be selected, without including the members of the Council, who also happened to be members of the Chamber's executive, and thus save the latter from acting in a dual capacity. Wb think the Chamber would have been well adviaed, considering the . small attendance at the mooting, had they postponed the putting of the pro_ poaition until a special meeting had been called; and as we previously stated, had beeii well advertised. STOCK SALE There was a lage yarding of stock at the saleyards on Thursday, and the auctioneers were kept busy until about 4 p.m. Bidding waa very brisk, a good number of buyers being present, and big prices were realised in neatly all lines. PROPOSED CONCERT.
A concert and supper in aid o? the new Preßbyterian hall building fund i 3 announced for June 9th. As some very excellent talent has been secured a musical treat is being looked forward to by the pleasure loving public MUNICIPAL PICTURES.
The question of municipal pictures in connection with the hall about to be erected, has been freely discussed by the ratepavors and"the man in the street" of late, as all the members of the new Town Council appear to be in favour of the proposition, it seems likely that something will be done in the mßttar whnn the time is ripe. From enquiries it has been ascertained that a plant coating from £2OO to £3OO would rsquira to be procured, and judging by the success the Foxton B irough Council have made of a similar venture, and by the support given to the present picture entertainment here, there appears to be no reason why Otorohanga should not be equally successful, at any "fnint heart never won faire ladye," and the general opinion is "'give it a go, Otorohanga." THE "BOOSTERS."
We are pleased to report, says a piominent member of the Otorohang a Boosters, that Otorohanga has at las t pecured a fortune, in the Bhapa oj> Mr Fortune who has taken up a
farm in the locality. We sincerely hope that in turn Mr Fortune will bB fortunate enough to make a for. tune, as by doing bo, it will be a fortunate opportunity for the Boos_ ters to do a bit of advertising.
