MANGAPEHI.
Own Correspondent,
The health inspector has been paying as fairly frequent visits of late, and keeping a sharp eye on the drainage and sanitary arrangements of the place. Four cases of typhoid have originated here within the last few weeks, so that apparently his attentions are warranted. We are pleased to report that the natives are readily falling in with his sggestions in erecting bath rooms, sanitary buuildings, and constructing proper drains, etc. Mr Wehi has just erceted another five roomed cottage, fitted with all modern conveniences and the native pa is taking the aspect of quite a village.
Messrs Ellis and Burnand are erecting two new cottage 3 on modern lines for their workmen, and it is quite possible that more may follow before long. They are also commencing on the erection of a r.ew and commodious boarding house for Mr A. Bntler, the one now in use being much too small to meet the present demands for accommcdation, consequent upon the settlement of the Mapara and other .adjoining sections. This boardinghouse will fill a longfelt want and it is to be hoped wcrk will be pushed through with all possible speed. The present relieving teacher, Mr Willis, is being transferred to Piriaka as from April Ist,'and Mr A. Ballance has been appointed temporarily here, pending the arrival of Mr McGrath, the teacher appointed permanently. The local Tennis Club has heen once again called upon to defend its title to the Howard Challenge Shield, the challengers being the Taumarunui Club, and the date of the match, April 4th. This will be Taumarunui's fourth attempt and as the local club 13 minus Mr Hayson's services, a very close contest may be anticipated. The rules regrding these matches are to be altered shortly to enable a club to w in the ShieM outright, and a meeting of the King Country Lawn Tennis Association is being held for this purpose at Taumarunui on Friday next, April 3rd, The following team will represent Mangapehi in the Shield match on Saturday Misses Johnson (2), E. McCracken, Mrs [Gray, Messrs McUracken, Buck, Brumby and Seymnur. It is understood the Taumarunui players will be Mrs Strang, Misses Symonds (2\ Garrett, and Messrs Gray, Alkins, Lorking and Sarah.
