AWAKINO COUNTY.
To the Editor. Sir,—l am pleased to see that the majority of councillors of the above county decided not to agree to the cutting off of the Mahoenui district to go into Waitomo County. Their decision for the time being i 3 wise, and to ray mind the cutting lip of the eouuty should not be allowed until the whole of the eastern side of the North riding take steps in t'ne matter, when, no doubt tho whole of the eastern side, including Te Anga, Man gaohae,Pomorangi, Kiritehere, Waitanguru, Mangaotald, an<? Mahoenui will decide to at Eorne future date; and as a matter of fact I see no reason why the Murakopa settlers should not be included. At present a petition is going the rounds with the object of inducing settlers there, and in the Kiriteheie to join forces with the Kawhia County. I trust that the Council will aIGO deal with the petition when it comes along with an obstinate refusal, and thereby not allow a handful of settlers to dominate the whole of the County. If the County is cut up there will be little doubt but it could be done on a more equitable basij than that proposed, and with a little more sense of reasonableness as regards the community of interest of ratepayers. Cutting off slices must not be tolerated. It must be ?. decision of the whole or not at all. It ;3 really regrettable what soma paopie will resort to in their attempt to coerce the n ajority, and the amateurish idea of handling figures ia highly amusing. One advocate in urging on a settler who declined to favour the proposal of Kawhia, and was considering trie Waitomo Council th« proper body to merge with, was informed that ha—ha advocate—had been supplied with reliable figures as regards the comparative cost of administration in the two counties, which ha said was £IOO a year for Kawhia, and not a penny less than £BOO a year in Waitomo. Other innuendoes have been set in motion, ani it is really surprising where they emanate from. However, they are like the figures: absolute rubbish —I am, etc., RATEPAYER.
