A SETTLER'S SOCIAL.

PRESENTATION TO MR SELF. A most enjoyable evening took place at the residence of Messrs Self Bros, and Fryer, who have recently disposed of tneir property. Though they are not leaving the district, the other settlers on the Managorino road decided to give a farewell smoking concert, which proved a great success, about five and twenty settlers and others being preßent. Mr Webber occupied the chair. After toast fo "The King" had been given with musical honours, many others followed, chief among which were 'Tha Guests." proposed by Mr Webber and resoonded to by Mr James Self, who then proposed "Mr Matthew." "The Army and Navy," proposed by Mr Hyde and most ably responded to by Mr Matthew. "The Press," was proposed by Mr James Self and respondad to by Mr Richard Self. Mr Snowdon proposed and Mr Edwards respoded to "The Farming Community," and Mr Bartlett proposed "The Ladies," to which Messrs Fryer and Knauff responded. "Local Bodies" was proposed by Mr Clark, and was respondad to by Mr Scholes. "Our Politicians," "Kindred Sports," "Tiie Temperance Party," and many others followed. During the evening Mr Owen Self was. presented with a very nice case of pipes by Mr Webber, on behalf of the settlers as a token of esteem. In a few well-chosen words, Mr Self acknowledged the present. Musical items both vocal and instrumental, were rendered by Messrs Kerr, Morton, Fryer. Matthew, Clothier, and i Scholes, and Mr McDougall McQueen gave a recitation. The evening was ; brought to a iloae with the usual sing i ing of "They are Jolly Good Fellows' s and "Auld Lang Syne "
