MANGAPEHI SPORTS.
SUCCESSFUL ANNUAL GATHERING. The Mangapehi Athletic Club's annual sports, which were held on Saturday iast may be considered a great success both from a sporting point of view and financially. Some little delay occurred and prevented the chopping everts being run off punctually to time, but ctherwise there was little to complain uf. Peck, the world's champion, demonstrated his skill as an axeman by running second from scratch in the standing and underhand open events 15 inch logs. ConsiJering he conceded 24 seconds ii: the standing block end 26 seconds in the underhand, the above performances may be classed as first-rate. The. running events wer« well distributed and tb3 times for most events were- really good, considering the bumpy natura cf the track. We would like to comment briefly on the display given by Lambert in the halfmile. Apparently runners of his calibre think that when they compete at '■ountry meetings they may take matter* into their own hands. Having no possible chance of winning the event himself, he seemed to deliberately lay himself out to obstruct Richardson. It is much to be re. r gretted that incidents like this happen, but the local protest committee ia sending a f»ll report to the secretary of the Auckland Centre, and we hope the matter will receive full consideration. Supporters of the club were pleased to see some of the events falling to the local competitors. Koea annexed the Maiden Underhand chop. Brumby the Maiden 100 yds race, McCracken the Sheffield 120 yds, and Henderson secured sec nnd place in the Miie and Half-mile handicaps. Following are the results: — Maiden Race, 100yds.--H.
