Sunday at midday an alarm of fire was sounded by the Te Kuiti Fire Brigade bell, and a thick column of smoke was seen ascending at the southern end of the town. It was discovered"that the fascines of the breastwork at the bend of the river had caught fire and it was feared serious damage would result. However, the brigade, under Captain Rawlinson, soon got to work and suppressed the outbreak. The long spell of dry weather experienced throughout thti distirct was broken temporarily on Sunday evening when rain fell for two or three hours. Howpver. it was not until Tuesday that the real downpour occurred. Rain fell in the early morning, and continued steadily thoughout the day.
