The charge of indifference or lack of interest in the diHtiict on the part of Auckland business people has frequently been made and judging from the manner in whi"h the southern merchants and others are establishing their connection locally, there appears to be a great deal of truth in the charge. This ia indicated moreover from the fact that on Monday a Very fine draft of fat sheep was forwarded to Wellington, tho sheep having been purchased by the Gear Meat Company. An attempt was made to do business with Auckland but the interest of the northern firm was not sufficient lo bring the deal to a head promptly. Perhaps one of the greatest results achieved from the distribution of small parcels of the rust-resisting oat se"d has been obtained by a Whatawhata farmer. He received a pound weight parcel of the seed, and planted the seed in a carefully prepared piece of land, from which he reaped over 1601b of first-class oats. Tho threshing of this oat, bo far, at tho Uuakura State Farm has produced 3000 bushels, and has averaged SO bushels to tho acre. Four thousand bush«ls more are expected to be the result of when all the crop ia threshed. Thin in irrespective of what has been acquired by tho many small farmers who received small parcels of seed from the Ruakura farm. This marvellous result has sprung from one plant discovered in the centre of a rust-infected paddock less than eight years ago.
