A FARMER'S PROPOSAL.
CUTTING OUT THE MIDDLEMAN. [BY TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Chriatchurch, Thursday. At yesterday's meeting of the Farmers' Union Mr W. F. S. Horrell suggested that the president might try to come to some arrangement between the farmers and the Labour organisations whereby produce could be distribute by means of central agencies se that it would be brought more directly into the hands of householders and so create a closer bond between the producer and the consumer. The president (Mr Ensor) approved of the proposal. He said that the high cost of living was due to the unnecessarily heavy cost of distribution. Mr S. Weld objected £tro:}gly to the proposal, and said he saw no reason why the farmers should sell their produce at a specially low rate to the people who were doing their best to take away the living of the farmers. The matter was left in the hands of the Commercial Committee.
