ENGINEER'S REPORT,

Potaka Road: Mr Lewis has now completed a distance of two miles on his metalling contract, and given fair weather conditions should complete the work this season. —Totoro Road: Messrs Hickson and West have metalled a distance of four miles seven chains leaving now only about 26 chains to be done; the extractors expect to complete contract in the course of eight or ten days.—Miroahuiao to Matiere: Mr Smyth made a start during the month with his metalling contract on this road. The work done includes a considerable amount of quarrying and other preliminary work.—Miroahuiao to Man gaotaki: Mr McDonald made another Htart during the month on this road with his metalilng contract, and completed a distance of about three chains. Owing to the difficulty in getting the consent from settlers, in ♦he ordinary way, to take metal from their sections, it be necessary to put the Public Works Act into motion and acquire one or two quarries on this road. Mr Smyth, who alio bud a formation contract on this road, completed it during; the month had made a good job of it. Ngapa«nga: Mr Rothery has now completed about two miles of metalling on thi=3 road and is doing th 9 work very creditably. - Arapae Road : The blending of the limestone metal with shingle along portions of this road between the Te Kumi road junction, arid the Mangawhitikau fiat, is still in hand, but will shurtly be completed. This dressing of shingle is making a very fine road. Mr Innes has now only about 50 chains of metalling to do to complete his contract on this road, and should finish at an early date. Mr Rothery's metalling contract on this road is also nearing completion, in fact, should be completed in a day or two. —Mangaorinoßoad: Mr Huffman made a start during the mon'h with hn metalling contract on this road, and has now completed about ten chains. Hanga tiki Waitomo: On this road Mr Lawson completed during ibe month a distance of about 40 chains, which now leaves only another 40 chains to be done, The orusher is now working very satisfactory and doing ali the makers guaranteed. This to a great measure is due to the experienced engine driver we now have, Caves Road: Messrs Tarry and Stanley have now their crushing plant in position and a considerable, amount of quarrying and other preliminary work done They expect to commence metalling in a day or two. Messrs Ryan Bros, are now making another start with their metalling contract on this road. They h9ve about 60 chains yet to do to complete their contract. Waitomo Valley Road: Messrs Tarry and Co. completed about a fortnight ago, their metalling contract on thU road and made a very good job of it; The distance metalled was one mile seventy-eiaht chains, including thirtyone chains of widening. Waiteti Road: Tenders were called during the month for the supply and delivery of metal for metalling a distance of 3J miles on this road. The lowest tender, that of Messrs Puna and Hoffman, at 3s 6d per yard, was accepted. 1 am now getting the road crowned up and prepared for metalling. The contractors are now on the ground ready to make a start immediately. —Hauturu to Otorohanga: Mr Ormsby made a start during the month with his metalling contract on this road and completed a distance of about 38 chains. Waipa River Bridge: The contractors for this roadwork are making good progress. Three stringer spars are now practically completed, including 2094 1 Eeet of hardwood piles driven, and in posi-tion.—Hangatiki-Otorohanga: Mr S. Board has now completed the bridge ovre the Mangapu stream on this road, and made a very decent job of it. The length of the bridge is 52 feet. The approaches will be made as soon aB possible. MiroahuiaoMatiere: Tenders were called during the month for re-metalling the portion of this road known as Herd's Hill, near Aria. The lowest tender, that of Mr J. Smythe, at 5s lid per cubic yard, was accepted.—General: A considerable amount of work is be ing done in connection with maintenance and repairs to roads in various parts of the County, particularly in the Tangitu district, where th 9 roads were in an exceptionally bad stato. —E.
