A FATAL FRACAS.
SEAFARING MAN KILLED. Wellington, Sunday. An altercation between some wateraide workers and a number of men from the steamer Makarina waa responsible for the death of Harry Gallagher, trimmer of that vessel, through being felled by a blow, last night. It appears that the men from the steamer were having a night ashore and went to an hotel. Here thev met some men from the waterfront. Trouble arose, and an objectionable word was made use of. Gallagher, it is said, demanded an explanation from the man using the language, but at this stage the barman interfered and sent the men outside. There, it is alleged, a man struck Gallagher on the jaw, knocking him down. Gallagher struck his head heavily on the ground, ai.d as he made no attempt to rise it was perceived that he was seriously injured. Dr Henry was sent for, and when he arrived, a few minutes later, he pronounced life extinct. The body was removed to the morgue. It is understood that Gallagher was a married man, and has a large family living in England. A man named John Albert Tucker was arrested and charged with the murder of deceased. Wellington, Monday. John Alfred Tucker was charged in the Magistrate's Court to-day with murdering Harry Galalgher, a trimmer on the Makarini. Accused was remanded till Wednesday.
