CANTEEN SCANDALS.

♦■ SOLDIERS AND CONTRACTS. By Telearaph—Press Association.—CopjTigiit London, Monday. Two further summonses in connection with the canteen scandals case have been issued againts a subordinate civilian and Lieut.-Colonel Whittaker, who was stationed at Malta with the Yorkshire Light Infantry. Lieut.Colonel Whittaker retired in 1906. | Mr Muir, K.C., continuing hia case for the prosecution on Friday, said that among the documents was a letter signed by James Ross Ness, formerly the manager of Liptons, Ltd., at Malts, and addressed to Minto, one of the managers of the firm in Britain. The date was October 18th, 1905. In this, Ness says:—"Whittaker writes to-day for his monthly cheque. Suppose the contract requires renewal." Evidence would be given, said Mr Muir, showing that when Whittaker went to Sheffield he made a fresh contract abnormally favourable to Liptons, Ltd Mr Muir added that the financial position of the military defendants was such as not to place them beyond temptations by wealthy tradesmen or subordinate civilians, all servants of a wealthy corporation, with a choice between obedience to orders or the loss of their positions. The persons primarily responsible were Minto and Cansfield, the former being the controlling mind.
