FIFTEEN TO ONE.
Scene : Ward of a metropolitan hospital. In ons bed is lying a member of the sporting fraternity ; a surgeon enters, attended by fifteen eager and obsequious dressers. Surgeon, to the dresser of th 9 case, after an able and exhaustive account of the symptoms : "Now, Mr. Smith, would you operate on this case ?" Mr. Smith, dresser: "No, sir,, I should not." "And you, and you, and you ?•" indicating the others. Unanimous negative. Surgeon, with conscious pride : "Well, gentlemen, you are all quite wrong. I intend to operate." Voice from the bed : "No you don't gov'nor ! Fifteen to one agin it—na chaunce. 'Ere, miss, I say— give me my clothes ; I'm orf '"
