TE KUITI IMPROVEMENTS.
DEVIATING THE RIVER. The Managokewa river has always been a source of trouble to the authorities at Te Kuiti, inasmuch as the stream approaches in a big elbow very close to the railway, leaving only sufficient room for the road to Waiteti. The bank at the elbow is high and has been eaten into considerably by the river until the roadway is seriously threatened, Tem porary work has been put in with a view to stopping erosion, but it has always been recognised that the only permanent remedy of the position is the deviation of the river. The Borough Council has now decided to acquire about four acres comprising the tongue cf land through which it is proposed to cut the new channel, and the services of a consulting engineer to plan and supervise the work are to be engaged. The work is of very considerable importance to the town as the position of (he road is getting steadily worse, and being in close proximity to a busy railway crossing there was constant danger of accident happening to horse vehicles.
