PROGRES OF WORKS. FOREMAN'S REPORT. General. —During the month the ordinary work in connection with the borough has been carried out. Several footpaths have been attended to and 1 intend to give them a coating of limestone chippings as time permits. Water Tables. —Work in connection with these is still proceeding, and several have been cleaned out. There are still a large number yet, to he done. Storm Water Ditches. A Btart haH been made cleaning out these ditches in George street and is proceeding along Hikaka street, then along Duke street. Owing to the tremendous growth of watercress in them, progresb is a little slow. However, those that have been cleaned show a great improvement. Brt-ast-*Work, Rora street. -Careful attention is being paid to this, and so far since last meeting no further damage has occurred. Kerhing and channelling.—During the month eight chains Of kerbing and channelling has been completed in Sheridan street and twelve chains in Taupiri street, making a total of kerb and channelling completed to date -12 chains. Total expenditure on Sheridan street .£2ll 5B 6d, Taupiri street XX) Da. Sheridan and King streets storm water drainage.—Work in connection with this ia proceeding satisfactorily, and to date twenty chains of drainpipes have been laid. There are alio seven sumps placed in position. Total ex penditure to date excluding pipes £6B 12s 6d. Rorn street Formation. —Formation of this street from Hurley's corner to the river h now com pleted, and next week I intend to start rolling same and get ready for laying down the tarred macadam, which will be proceeded with mi soon as *tho road is ready. Total metal carted to Rora street to date 770 yards, expenditure on same £234 4s 2d, total shingle carted to Rora street 550 yards, total expenditure on same £137 10s. Quarrying at To Kumi: Crushing With the steam roller is still proceeding at Te Kumi '.;uarry, and during the" month 600 yards of material has been crushed and delivered on the road. Total expenditure on sane £9O, which workHjmt at 3s ner cubic yard. Mixing asphalt. Mixing asphalt for footpaths has been proceeding the whole of the month, and a total of 120 yards of screenings was mixed. Total exnenditure on same £B9 3s 6d, total asphalt mixed to date 395 yard. Sewers.-These are being carefully attended to and are flushed out every week and kept in a clean condition. Sheridan Street—This Street has been formed up and treated With a coat of limeatono metal 10 inches thick. On top of this a coating offriver shingle was spread to a depth of 4 inches for blinding. Total expenditure on same .£l5O, total expenditure on labour in connection with this street to date £7O !>a 3d. Taupiri Street.—-A start has been made forming this street. A considerable amount of pumice has been carted to fill up over the culvert opposite Mr Black's blacksmith shop in Taupiri street. This street will be treated the same as Sheridan street. Total .xpenditure on same to date £22 4h "id. Electric Light Power Station Storm Water Drainage. As instructed by the Works Committee a storm water drain was laid from the creek in Taupiri street to receive the waste water, and down pipes from the roof. Water Main Extension.- The water main is being extended alone, .Jennings street a distance of 1(1 chains. Owing to having struck rock in the trench the cost of laying same has been somewhat expensive. This is now passed and progress should be much faster. Total mains laid to date iix chains,total expenditure on same £l2 4s 4d. Edward Street—At the head of tins street the culvert across Hill street is only an eight inch wooden box. This has proved to be too small on many occasions, causing the water to flow over the road and do a considerable amount of damage. Now that Hill street is about to be permanently put downl would like to recommend this culvert be replaced by 14 inch pipe. Thiß would cost about £s.—Thomas Dix, Foreman. ELECTRICAL ENGINEER'S REPORT. Applications for Supply. Five more have been registered, and nine have been connected to the supply mains, making a total of 174 registered and 100 connected to the supply mains. Net-work and Supply.—The supply has been maintained practically constantly during the past month, with the exception of December *')tn, 13th, and 10th, 10 13, and January 7th, 1914, when short interruptions have occurred, duo to the lines blowing together and causing short circuits. J Engine and Producer. -The erection of the plant is almost; completed, and the official test is expected to no run at an early date. The producer will be fed with wood until such time as coal is available, thu savins any further delay in working the plant. Producer Room. It is very apparent that the roof of thia room will have to be raised another six or seven foot, preferably in the form of a gable, and a substantial Ventilator fixed on top, and that the roof be painted inside and out to protect it from the fumes and smoke given off by the producer generator, and also some accommodation be provided as a coal bunker, and to protect it from the weather. Extension of Lines. 1 enclose a separate report dealing with the cost of extend ing the mains to Mr Brewer's residence on the Mangaorino road and to Mr Vause's residence situated in John street. Recommendation. - That Spare parts other than those specified in the contract be ordered without de lay as those supplied are not sufficient to avoid the plant, being shut down for some time should a breakdown occur.—R.
