BUNKER COAL ON FIRE.
AUCKLAND-BOUND STEAMER
Melbourne, Monday. * The steamer Uford, bound from Bunbury to Auckland with jarrah timber, put into Port Melbourne with her bunker coal on fire. On Wednesday last, when the vessel was about 200 miles south of Adelaide, the coal was discovered to be on fire. The crew, by working strenuously at the pumps, managed to keep the fire in check. Several suffered severely from the fumes. Being unable to overcome the blaze with the appliances on board, the captain decided to put into Port Melbourne. The fire is still burning, and it will probably be necessary to completely flood the bunker 3 before the seat of the trouble can be reached. It is supposed that the fire started by spontaneous combustion.
