WAITOMO COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting- of the Waitomo County Council was held at Te Kuiti on Monday evening. There were present Cn Scholes (chairman), Potte, O'Dwyer, Smyth, Berry, Were, Gregg, and Johnston. Hospital Rate. —The secretary of th 6 Counties' Association wrote ac

knowledging receipt of a letter from the Council requesting the legal opinion be obtained from the association's solicitor as to whether a native townBhip was separately responsible for a hospital rate. —The clerk explained that the County paid the hospital rate an Otorohanga township and the opinion was required as to the responsi-

bility of the Town Council, Mangaotaki Road. The assistant roads engineer wrote stating the amount of £2OO had been transferred to the Council for expenditure on the Mangotaki road, and he would be glad to receive proposal-* for expending the same. Honikiwi Telephone.—The Department wrote stating there was a deficiency on the year's working and requested the Council to remit the amount of £3 16s 4d.

Otorohanga Pound. The Department wrote stating the road had been stopped and declared Crosvn land with a view of the land being used as a pound site. —Received, Tar.gitu Telephone.—A letter was read from the Settlers' Association stating the settlers were willing to proceed with the project, and requesting that the secretary to the committee should be instructed to call tenders.—The clerk said he had seen some of those interested, and had suggested that a private wire should be erected and guaranteed by the Council. He understood this cotr3e would be adopted. Wandering Stock. The secretary Tangitu Settlers' Association wrote requesting information as to stock allowed to wander on roads. The clerk was instructed to write stating if particulars as to the offenders were furnished the Council wouid take action against the offenders in court. Tanigtu Rates.—The secretary Tangitu Settlers' Association wrote with reference to rates in the block.—The clerk explained that the question of placing property owners cn the rate roll rested with the Valuation Departmtnt and the Council could only use the rolls supplied. FGading Scheme.—The Minister for Land 3 wrote in reply to a letter from the Council concerning a scheme for roading native lands, stating the matter had also been brought under his notice by the member for the district. He would give the matter consideration. Awakino Road. —A letter was received from A. L. Hunt, concerning the state of the Awakino road. The engineer said the matter was dealt with in his report. Pirongia-Kawhia Road, —-T. Dent wrote drawing attention to bad places on the road.—The engineer said there was an amount of thirds to be spent on the road and he had the matter in j hand.

Morgue for Te Kuiti. The town clerk wrote conveying a resolution passed at last meeting of the Borough Council requesting the County Council to co operate with the borough in erecting a morgue.—Resolved to assist in the matter up to an amount of £25. Mangaorino Loan—Messrs Broadfoot and Finlay wrote conveying a letter from the Borough Council which stated that the Council was willing to fall in with the original agreement and enclosing a cheque for the arrears according to that agreement. Deferred till next meeting Balance-Sheet. —The half yearly bal-ance-sheet was returned certified by the Auditor and Comtroller-General.

Loan Proposals. Resolutions in connection with authorising the folowing loan proposals were passed:— Mangaotaki £6OO, Kio Kio £SOOO, Oruawhera £1250 and Otewa £1750, Waiteti £ISOO.

PaemakG Road.—Cr O'Dwyer proposed that the Council subaidise the thirds now being expended on the Paemako road up to £3O. Seconded by Cr Smyth and carried. Cr Were introduced Mr Mlling as a deputation concerning the e ipenditure of some thirds on a road surveyed from the Tawarua road. Mr Milling explained that he intended building, and the road in question would give him access to hiß house. He also had access to the Tawarau road, but would like his thirds to be expended on the branch road. He had already expended some money but had deviated from the surveyed road in order to avoid a big cutting.—The engineer was instructed to visit the road and report. Te Tahi and Mangati Roads.—Cr Potts drew attention to the necessity of repairs on theae roads and requested that the work be pushed ahead to give settlers the opportunity of getting in manure. The engineer stated the work was being put in hand. Accounts to the amount of £1259 Is 5d were passed for payment. Pungarehu Loan. A number of settlers in the Pungarehu-Maire spacial rating area petitioned to have the metal on the roads made continuous —■ nine feet wide and nine inches deep—instead of twelve inches deep leaving certain places unmetalied as proposed by the engineer.—L°ft with the engineer to arrange with those interested. Mairoa Loan. A number of settlers in the Mairoa special rating araa petitioned to have the metal extended on the Hauturu road after certain widening had been done on the Mairoa road. The engineer said there was more money available for the Mairoa road than would be necessary. He had intended putting an extra three inches of metal on portion of the road and doing some widening. The work suggested to be done on the Hauturu road could then be earned out. —Cr Were said it Would be necessary to get the consent of the Minister to spend money part from the allocations. —It was decided to ascertain the exact position. Te Kumi-Hangatiki Road. —• The

engineer reported having gone over this road in company with Mr Lee. Nothing of a temporary nature could be done on the road line, but there was a grant of £2OO on the Supplemntary Estimates which might be utilised to advantage in formation work.

Cotter's Road.—The engineer reported that Cr Berry and himself bad inspected the road in question. The expenditure of a few pounds would not be of any use, at least £IOO being necessary.
