HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLEGRAM.

BUTTER PRICES REMAIN HIGH

Wellington, Monday

The High Commissioner's cable, dated December 13th, is as follows, quotations unless otherwise specified being average market prices on spot: Mutton. —The market is firm, but little business is doing, and there is no ehange in prices. Lamb.—The market is firm, owing

to Bmall supply and to high price restricting baainesß. Canterbury twos 6£d, heavy 6*d, heavy weights 5Jd. Other brands are extremely scarce, and cannot be quoted.. Beef.—No change in prices. Trade is quiet on account of the decline in prices for chilled meat. Chilled hindquarters 4£-d, forequarters 3|d. Butter.—The market remains firm, with no change in prices for Australian, New Zealand, or Argentine. Danish 130s to 1335, Siberian 110s to 114s.

Cheese.—The market remain firm, with fair demand. Canadian, white 56s to 675, coloured 66s to 68s; New Zealand, white 65s to 665, coloured 66= to 675. There is no change in prices for English, Australian, or Dutch cheddars.

Wool. The market for tops is quiet, and all grades are Jd per lb lower than previous quotations.

DUNEDIN WOOL SALES

Dunedin, Monday. The first wool sales of the season were held this morning. Halfbred wool showed a drop all round in sympathy with Christehurch sales, probably ljd to 2d. There was not so great a fall on the whole as had been anticipated, and considering the gloomy reports from prices were surprisingly good, and bidding, ejpecially by Continental buyers and local mills, waß keen.
