AMUSEMENTS.
EMPRESS PICTURES. "Human Target." Walter, the expert rifle shot, whose turn includes such remarkable feats of marksmanship ast he shooting of a flower out of the mouth of his girl assistant and the piercing of an article poised on her head, devises a new trick. A loaded cannon is trained on the assistant, who is bound to a post. The fuse is lighted, and Walter, with a shot from his rifle tries to cut it before it can reach the touch hole A quarrel between the marksman and his assist ant leads to the girl's father tampering with Walter's weapon, which misses fire, until the flame is within an inch of the powder. But his last shot is successful when the flame has almost reached the powder. THE SMART SET. The Smart Set will visit Te Kuiti on Wednesday next, under the direction of Mr Walter George and Maynard Dakin, who are making an extended tour of the Dominion, and recently completed a two months' season in Wellington, where they delighted large audiences. The Smart Set is a combination which haa been organised for the past ten years, during which it has visited many countries in the four quarters of the globe. The novel methods adopted by the Smart Set as a means of introducing their musical fare are attributes which have elicited favourable comment from the press in the many countries visited by this company. The fun and merriment is headed by Mr Maynard Dakin, who, it will be remembered, is one of London's most versatile and refined society entertainers. A first-class programme of high standard and musical excellence will be presented, consisting of original humorous songs, duets, trios, quartettes and ventriloquial items, in which "Sunshine Jameß" plays an important part, in the hands of Mr Edward Ellott, who manipulates the mechanical figure. The fine concerted numbers form the principal feature of their performance, and though a strong element of humoar pervades, it is essentially musical thoughout. The Smart Set are credited with being the originators of costume comedy companies, and the name is registered by them. The box plan is at McColl' 3.
