Sureties having been approved, Robert Semple one of the imprisoned strike leaders, was released from gaol on Wednesday. Mesßrs John Payne, M.P., and Christian Imandt are sureties for £SOO each in the cbbs in which Semple is bound over to keep the peace for twelve months. In the other case, in which Semple is remanded to appear at Auckland, Charles Johnston and Anton Brogen provide bail of £250 each. We draw attention to the fact that entries for the Exhibition sportß ear* nival, pipe band contest, highland games, etc., conducted under the auspices of the Auckland Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union, will close with Mr A. J. Woodley, 12 His Majesty's Arcade, Auckland, on Tuesday, December, 28rd f 1913. It is to be hoped that the King Country "sports" will enter freely. The programme, which extends over several days, includes the New Zealand championship*, and Mr Woodley will be pleased to forward complete liotß on application.
The Customs officers at Belfast are examining the luggage of every passenger who arrives from Britain in order to prevent the importation of re?olvers and ammunition. The Appeal Court has allowed Richard Wootton's appeal against a stay of execution respecting the costs ordered for payment to Wootton's solicitors in connection with the recent libel case, pending Robert Siever's appeal. Counsel stated that Wootton was going to Australia for a year. The demand by the postal employees for als per cent, advance on their wages has again been refused by the English Postmaster-General. H 8 denies the report that the Government intends to utilise the services of territorial telegraphists in the event of a general strike. The likelihood of a Christmas strike is increasing. It was rumoured recently that the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association had cabled to the Victorian Association suggesting an amicable settlement of differences regarding the visit of the American athletes. An inquiry elicits that nothing has been heard from New Zealand, and the Americans will not visit Victoria.
Attention is drawn to the change advertisement appearing in our first page announcing that M. Kinsler and Son, lace manufacturers of Nottingham, England, wili be clearing their stocks now in Te Kuiti during next week. Assorted goods are showing- in Rora street, close to the Empress Theatre, and to save removal goods are marked down at bedrock prices. Inspection is invited.
Our attention haa been drawn to the report by our Ohura correspondent of the Matiere stock gale, which appeared in the issue of December 6th, and in which it was stated that a large percentage of the yarding owing to dull bidding passed into the hands of the auctioneers. The Farmers' Auctioneering Company, by whom the sale was conducted, has requested us to contradict the statement and report that all conditioned cattle found ready markets, and with few exceptions all entries changed hands at current rate?. A number of sales were made to outside buyers, and the sale was a most successful one the full capacity of the yards being required.
