AN EXCELLENT PROGRAMME. GOOD MEETING ASSURED. Settlers in new country are noted for the interest and energy they display in providing recreation lor the holiday season, and it. can safely be said that no section of the community better deserves to enjoy the holiday season than those who are engaged in turning the wilderness into pasture. The sports club inaugurated at Tangifcu already gives promise of being ranked as one of the most progressive sports bodies of the district, and the programme of the meeting promoted for New Year's Day is well worthy of attention. Tho amount of .V-f>o is being provided as prize money and with the addition of handsome trophies it will be seen very liberal prevision is being made for competitors. The programme includes chopping, running, andllhorsc events, and tho sum of £ls has been allotted for the horse competitions. The local chop, in which the interest is bound to he exceptionally keen, is endowed with a handsome challenge cup,'..to be won twice in succession or three limes :iv intervals, and the struggle for possession of the trophy is sun- t<> h<> extremely ([keen. Granted fine weather on New Year's Day there should, be a record attendance at Mapiu ar.c the programme which is published in another column is well worthy ot the attention of athletes generally.
