King Country Chronicle Saturday, December 6th, 1913 AN URGENT WORK.
The condition of the main road between Tangitu and the railway at Waimiha is a matter nf grave concern to the settlers of a large district ;tl any time. At the present juncture the state of the road is such that unless prompt steps are taken to improve it serious loss will accrue to the settlers. The majority of the Tangitu people are supplying cream !-j the Te Kuiti dairy factory and the supply has to be taken over the road to the railway. A portion of the road or a distance of about half a mite has been rendered almost impassable by the racenfc rains and when the m la! begins to dry traffic will be held ;;p entirely. This means the blocking oi the cream delivery at, the height of the season and it requires no explanation to understand what such a happenir;.Y means to the settlers. It is to be hoped prompt steps will be taken to keep tha road open and so avert what would be little short of a calamity. It is unfortunate beyond measure, from an engineering point of view, that the weather has been such as to preclude the possibility of having that portion of the road completed in time to cope with the [traffic of the busy milking season. From the settlers' point of view it is more unfortunate still. If is recognised that temporary work on clay roads is a method of expending money which is to be avoided at almost any cost, but in the present instance unless some temporary means is adopted to o/ereome the existing danger the loss to the settiara is guing to be enormous. Moreover, any measures to remedy the conditions in order to be effective must be undertaken immediately. The position is such that would never have bean created in a normal season. The most soundly based calculations are liable to be upset by abnormal conditions and there is every reason why extraordinary efforts should be made to cope with circumstances which threaten to have such a serious effcet on people who are doing the work of settlement under many disabilities.
