BOROUGH BY-ELECTION.
Mr G. Elliott, a candidate for the Borough Council by-election, addressed : a meeting of ratepayers the Municipal Hall last evening. Cr J. Walsh occupied the chair. The candidate in giving a resume of his platform stated that he favoured letting large works by contract and small works he considered should be done by day labour. He considered that the lasting power ot river shingle was greater than that of limeßtonP. Mr Elliott spoke at length on the advisability of the council obtaining thn rights to generate their electrical power from the | Wairere Falls which he had estimated would generate some 1500 | horse-power, and he thought a light railway scheme to the backblockg could be run in conjunction with the lighting Bcheme. The speaker specially referred to the present bad state of the roads and footpaths in the borough, also to the general beautifying of tne town. He strongly objected to the suggestion put forward by some that the present Domain should be cut up for building Bites. The candidate thought the Borough Council might well advertise Te Kuiti in view of the tourist traffic to and from the Exhibition, suggesting that the journey should be broken at Te Kuiti and a visit made to the Caves. He thought the present system of gravel and tarring the roads was too costly and felt sure that a more reasonable scheme could be devised. Ihe candidate announced that if eleru-d he would pursue a progressive policy on business linos and in the best interests of the borough. The meeting closed with a nearty vote of thanks to the candidate for his address and to the chairman for presiding.
