FINANCE AND ROADS.
MR WILSON'S VIEWS. Speaking in the House on the subject of borrowing for roada, Mr C. K. Wilson, in advocating the cause of the backblocks said:—"There ia no doubt that the success of this country depends upon the advancing to our settlers and local bodies the money that they require at a cheap rate. I am astounded that any man who calls himself loyal to the country should get up in the House and pay that we on this side are borrowing too much money, when we are borrowing for such purposes as advance 3 to pettier®, to workers, and to local bodies, and for public works. I sugsrest to the Minister—-I am more radical {ban he is, and I would urge upon him to make the £1,750,000 £2,000,000 and to ear-mark the £250,000 for the purposes of the backblocks country. I beileve there ia nu other way than this, and I think every honourable member in the House would loyally support the Minister if he desired to add that to the proposed loan far the jrarpoae which I have indicated. 11 i'j impossible for us to cat out of Hie e< idition I have referred to unlss we gel cut of the rut, and make special pro- sion f.-u- two or three years at ienni, so ss to provide for arterial roads for the back country. If that were done, I am sure the settlers would do their duty and provide the balance for the branch roads. I Want to impress this point upon the Minister of Public Works.
