IMPROVED WATERWAYS.
CANaL AND RIVER SCHEME. CONFERENCE AT AUCKLAND. An important conference of representatives of various local bodies was held at the Auckland Barbour Board buildings on Tuesday 10 discuss a proposal to request the Government to set up a Royal Commission to deal with the question of waterways and iniand navigation in the Auckland province. There was an attendance uf representatives of the Harbour Board, City Council, Chamber of Commerce, Industrial Associa- j tion, and various provincial local ■ boides. Messrs Mostyn Jones and N. C. Matthew represented the Te Kuiti Ch amber of (Jomn-eree. The j chairman of the Harbour Board (Mr J. H. Gunson) presided, and moved the following resolution : "That this Conference of local bodies, repiesentitives of clumbers of commerce and industrial associations, request? the Government to set up a Roval Commission to inquire into the question of: (a) The improvement of the Waikato river and its tributaries navigable waterways; (b) the advisability or otherwise of constructing a ! system of waterways connecting the Waikato river with either the Manukau harbour or the vvaiternata harbour, cr both, from the point of view of cost and of the economic and commercial result to be attained; (c) the facilities and improvoir.sr.ts advisable in order to complete a .ijtssm of through communication by water between other centres of commercial and agricltural importance and the Waitemata harbour from the point cf view of cost ana of the ecomonical and ! commercial result- to be attained; (<i) the methud by which fund; for the -purpose eculd be obtained and secured, and as to the system of control and management of such waterways."
