TE KUITI LAWN TENNIS CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of the Te Kuiti Lawn Tennis Club was held in the chronicle office on Monday evening last. A fair number of members attended and a large amount of business was transacted.
The report and balance-sheet were read and adopted, the report being as follows:—"I have to report that during the past season a Isrge amount of money was spent by the club in acquiring a lease from Mr Somerville, which ycur committee consider is a most suitable piece of ground, also in laying down four sand courts, erecting wire netting round the whole ground, | erecting a pavilion, purchasing nets, | roller, etc., several members kindly guaranteeing the necessary amount at the Bank of New Zealand, to which members the thanks of the club are due. The courts, considering that they had just been laid doron, played fairly well at the beginning of the season, but towards the close of the season they became dusty and uneven and were not good for play.' The membership was not as good as was ex , pected and there are still a number of subcsriptions, I regret to sav, unpaid, i It would materially assist the club if members would pay their outstanding j subscriptions without delay. Your committee deem it advisable that two courts should he laid down in asphalt at once so as to be ready for play this season, and trust*that this matter will be thoroughly discussed at this meeting, There seems to be little doubt that unless some material improvement is ma3e to the court?, tennis will not prosper in Fe Kniti as it ought and members will not. join the club, The matter of further finance will have to be discussed in fairness to the guarantors and tnis should be gone into. During the past season a visit was paid to H aim Hoc and some enjoyable games played. The Shield won from Tamarunui the year hefore last was taken-from Te Kuiti last season by the Manpapehi Club. Whilst congratulating Mangapehi upon their win I fee) that the chief cause of Te Kuiti's Toss was the lack of practice on the part of the member?, owing to the rough state of the courts. Your committee feels convinced that if the members pull together and materially improve the courts,""a most successful sea?on will en?ue, but on the other hand, if nothing is done to the courts interest in the game will wane, As our bank overdraft is £9O, members Will realise Umt immediate steps must be taken to place the ciub in a sounder financial position them i i is at the present time. --T E.
