KAWHIA COUNTY COUNCIL.

—•*•-- - ENGINEER'S REPORT.

Since making my last report, plans and specifications for widening 62 chains of Lemon Point to Te Maika road, 68 chains of Waitetuna to Aotea road, and 14.19 chain 3 of Kauri road have been approved by the district engineer. In regard lo the latter work no authority for the additional moneys required to complete t!ie work has yet been received. I have made an engineering survey and prepared plans for widening an extra 24.45 chain 3 to expend the additional £250 that has retired to complete his work on this road, having abandoned it during winter as mentioned in a previous report. All work on Kihi and Kawhia to Marckopa river roads has been completed, and satisfactory progress is being made on Waitetuna to Aotea and Lemon Point tu Te Maika roads. As it iB now nearing the time of year when road graders may be used to best advantage I would be pleased with your instructions as to what moneys will be available for this class of work, and on which roads to be expended, so that the grader may be put into use as soon as advisable. I have interviewed the' assistant engineer. Public Works Department, in regard to use of the grad9r, and he has promised to make every effort to have sufficient maintenance moneys authorised to keep the grader fully employed | during the summer. In regard to the Muturangi road deviation, I haveV again inspected the road together with the Public Works Department overseer, who, I understand, approves of the recommendations made by the Council's special committee in their report laid before you sometime ago. In regard to the fixing of the levels of Kawhia streets, ' I have nearly completed the necessary engineering survey and have commenced preliminaries in connection with the plans. I hope to be able to devote more tjme to this work between this and your next meeting. Grants of £350 for Kinohaku to Waiharakeke road aid £331 10s 6d for Awaroa to Waiarakeke road have been offered to the Council for expediture. I would advise in regard to the first mentioned grant that the work be carried out at the spot known as "The Orchard," so that a particularly had portion of beach may be avoided. In regard to the remaining grant I would advise that the work be commenced at the Wihaarakeke landing, as practically the whole of the settlement on this road can be reached in* a much shorter distance from this point than Awaroa, and it would also benefit many settlers in the Taumatatotara block. The building of the launch slip is nearly completed, and should be ready for use in a few days. Mosßrs Scott and Forsyth have completed the erection of all launch landings, etc., comprised in their contract, and have also placed the buoys in the Kinohaku channel. The repairs to the winch at Awaroa have been carried out, and steps have been provided at the lower landing. In regard to this latter, it will be necessary iwing to the peculiar nature of the river bank to form a short jetty from the main bank to the steps the top of the steps being at present sft above the level of the lower bank or. which they rest, I estimate the cost at about £ls. Another matter I wish to bring to your notice is the inconvenience often experienced in the handling of goods at the shore end of Kawhia wharf. It frequently happens that more than one vehicle desires to load or discharge goods at the same time, but a 9 there is only space for one there is considerable delay in the handling of gooda even though two trucks are provided. I would advise that more room be obtained by filling-in a small space at the end of the wharf and a double end to tiie rails be provided so that two vehicles may be served at the one time with the two trucks available. I j would also advise that the work of reuniting Kawhia wharf be proceeded with. 1 do not advise that all damaged timbers 'cm a: once renewed, but it is advisable that, at least "?0 pin- cent, of the bracing under the wharf be re- | niaeed without .:.-■;••■ - The wharf at present iJ practicaim devoid of effective bracing, ihe 'having been e-ionnway hv iwwi> m the lower ends, the solid ireg uuw remaining are too ehorf- and a: too nigh level : to tie eifeurive. i '.veuid advise that [ repairs to the evaem of a:'o to £4<t ! be' carried out at one-.
