I works under, tho charge oi! the Council since your last meeting a a follows —I inspected as instructed th<? ration of the Kiekie road where slipped away and am of the opinion \vhici! I former);- he-Id, that any further work of a permanent nature, long frontages of sections 2, 3. and 4, block 2, would be an absolute waste of muv.ey. Any mor-j done on tha present location m:ist necessarily be of a temporary nature. I have; made representations to the Public 1 Works Department on the matter, suggesting that a deviation ba con-
sidered, but as this however, will involve complication?, it cannot be hastily dealt with. la the meantime an endeavour wiil bo made to give rough access. 1 also inspected the proposed extension of KelTs road, suggested by the lessees of subdivisions of a native block near Kio Kio. These settlers have no lpgal access whatever. Jn order to take a road and carry out the necessary bridge work and formation a sum of about £SOO would be required, but there are no funds for the purpose or any likelihood of getting any un less provided by / the settlers themselves. They are suppliers to the local dairy factory and are doing a considerable amount of improvements to their holdings, and appear to deserve a little help in the way of access if it were possible. Plans and specifications of a small bridge on Oniao road were prepared during the month and approved by the Public Works Depart ment, The work, however, cannot be proceeded with until further funds, which have been applied for, are available, Plans, etc., were also prepared for 111 chains of dray road formation on the Kohua road. Tenders for this work were invited and subsequently let to Mr J. Smyth, the lowest tenderer, viz., £124 7s. On tho HauturuOtorohanga road plants, etc.,of a small installing contract to complete the metalling of this road were prepared and tenders are now being invited. On the Miroahuiao-Mangaotaki road, Mr McDonald completed hiß earth work contract, and Mr Edgar has now made start with the stone culverts. Mr limes still continues quarrying in connection with his metalling contracts on the Arapae and Pukeavuhe roads. On the Rotokotuku road Mr Rothery has completed about 40 chains of formation and should finish his contract at an early date. Mr Lawson has now nearly quarried sufficient metal to complete his contract on the Hangatiki-Waitomo road. On the Caves road Messrs Ryan Bros, are quarrying the necessary matal required to complete about another 60 chains. They have intimated, howeve', that they cannot accept a contract to complete the remainder of this road. Messrs Tarry and Cartwright have now made a start with their formation and metalling contract on the Waitomo Valley road. I inspected the preliminary workp in connection with the erection of the bridge over the Waipa river at Kawa. Mesßrs Scott and Forsyth have now a fair amount of gear and staging in position and j will be ready to start pile driving very shortly. Men are now employed on most of the newly metalled roads, raking in the metal, cleaning out water tables, etc. On the Te Kuiti-Awakino road, three men are employed faseining and generally repairing the portion of the road under the control of the Council. lam endeavouring to make arrangements to put a topping of screenings or river shingle on portions of the Te Kumi and Arapae roads, as soon as possible. Various works in connection with maintenance and repairs to roads were carried out during the month in many parts of the country. I propose during the coming month to engineer and prepare plans for formation and bridge work on the Hangatiki-Otorohanga road, and for formation on the Hutiwai road, and also aa far as possible get metalling contracts ready for the coming season. E. R. GOULD, County Engineer.
