BREEDING TWIN-BEARING EWES
A remarkable, and, so far ai I know, write 3 a correspondent of the Norfolk Chronicle, quite original line cf investigation which ia oi great interest io sheep breeders, is being pursued by Sir Alexander G. Beii. at ovie time geologist oi' the Dominion of Canada, on his farm in Nova Scotia. For some ten or twelve years he has been endeavouring to fix a bleed of sheep having four or sis milking tents, and producing twin; at " birth. He noticed that the proportion ot sheep having four developed nipples was larger among twin-benvin.l4 ewes, and this started him on his quest for a corelation between the two. in a few years he produced a otrain of ewes which had, as a normal condition, four teats of nearly equal size, all yielding milk, by mating- four-nippled ewes with four nippled rams. Reversion seldom occurred, and when the strain was cnce established these ewes were found to be as fertile as ordinary 3heep, if not morp so.
