OHURA DAIRY FACTORY.
i The closing down of the Ohura | iooperafive dairy factory is a circumstance to be deeply regretted. In \ ears (o come hiss will bo felt more .widely Ihn i ■ is t!ie ease ;it present. What Aiay tie regarded as other contributing causes Buch as the failure of original guarantors to carry out their pledges; criticism of directors hecause of low prices, and the failure of the Niho Niho settlers to milk, no doubt had some effect !.uu these were details which mirht have been overcome had roads been provided for the district. The roading of the district is a matter which is engaging the attention of the authorities to a considerable degree, and the fact that the shocking roads of the Ohura district contributed largely to 'the failure of the dairy factory cannot be denied. That backblock factories can be successfully carried on in the district is exemplified by tho experience of the Aria factory, which, despite bad roads and distance from railway paid out to suppliers an amount which compares favourably with any other factory in (ho province. Jt ifl to be sincerely hoped that the Ohura setlers will not be daunted by the present failure and that dairying on cooperative lines will ultimately be adopted. The experience of other districts has shown plainly the advantages to be gained thereby, and no settlor can afford to blind himself to material advantages in any shape oi- form.
