The rate at which lime sets depends on its fierceness of division. Lime, and specially hot lime, has a good effect upon the mechanical condition of stiff clays. Gpysum also coagulates clay, but it has not the beneficial action of lime in ether directions. Lime greatly hastens the production of nitrates. It has a good effect in liberating potash and phosphoric acid, especially when the latter is combined with iron or alumina. When required by a soil, lima produces larger crops. It produces root crops which aro of greater feeding value per ton. It may often be a profitable applicatint grass land. Lime kills sorrel], docks, and ether acid-loving weed 3. It is especially stimulating to lucerne, clovers, and leguminous plants. Lime will not act if phosphates are deficient. It increases the need, everywhere present, of ploughing in green manures and stubbles; it facilitates this operation. ' The surest method of determining the need for lima is to dress trial strikes and avail results.
